Mary Beth serves as “outside” general counsel for small to mid-sized companies. In this capacity, she provides counsel and transactional services to clients in the areas of business, insurance, real estate and HR/employment law. With comprehensive arbitration and trial experience, Mary Beth can also deliver the representation and guidance required when unresolved business or employment disputes give rise to formal litigation.
Over the past eight years, Mary Beth has concentrated much of her practice on assisting clients in the development of large scale renewable energy projects. Mary Beth navigates the complex energy, land use, real estate and contract issues involved in these projects and provides the negotiation and transactional expertise necessary to move these projects from conceptual to operational phases.
Mary Beth has extensive experience working with nonprofit organizations, having served for years as General Counsel to the San Diego Association of Realtors®, Judge Advocate to the Mission Bay Yacht Club and General Counsel to the Women’s Council of Realtors-San Diego Chapter. She routinely provides legal counsel to nonprofit boards and management in the areas of corporate governance, real estate, human resources, contracts and general risk management.
In 2005-2006, Mary Beth was retained by the Imperial Irrigation District (IID) to review all legal matters and assist the board in determining whether to create an in-house legal department. Over this time, Mary Beth performed and managed legal services for the various departments, including Water, Energy, Real Estate, Human Resources and Contract Administration. Mary Beth was instrumental in establishing the first in-house legal department for the IID since its formation in 1911. She continues to represent the IID on a variety of legal matters.
Prior to establishing her own practice, Mary Beth served as In-House Counsel to Insurance Company of the West (ICW), working predominantly on construction litigation matters. As Senior Lead Counsel, she carried a full case load while supervising other attorneys in the legal department.
Mary Beth began her legal career as an associate with the premier trial firm of McInnis, Fitzgerald, Rees, Sharkey & McIntyre.
Mary Beth is a 1990 graduate of the University of San Diego School of Law and a 1986 graduate of the California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo.
